Modern and Contemporary Art Tanis 1915 Daniel Garber, American, 1880 - 1958 Oil on canvas Currently not on view 2011-60-1 Purchased with funds contributed by Marguerite and Gerry Lenfest, 2011 |
LabelTanis reflects Daniel Garber’s academic training under Thomas Anshutz (American, 1851–1912) at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, where he studied between 1899 and 1905. Anshutz placed special emphasis on the study of nature and the human form, which Garber later married with the iridescent color and shimmering light effects of French Impressionism to create scenes of domestic felicity and ethereal beauty. In this painting Garber’s daughter pauses in the open doorway of his Bucks County studio. The viewer looks past and through the young girl, whose dress has been rendered translucent by the glowing sunlight, into the vista of the radiant flower-filled garden. |
